<p>20 in ERC20 token means the 20th ERC that was posted by somebody. That person proposed a general interface for fungible tokens.</p>

<p>Fungible tokens specify that each token doesn't have any priority or uniqueness, they are all worth equally the same, just like any currency (e.g. Rupees, Dollars, Yen, etc).</p>
<p>ERC20 token works similarly just like fungible tokens, it doesn't distinguish whether you have token no.1 or token no.100 they all represent same value.</p>
